BLOUNTSVILLE CUB SCOUTS in Pack 158 are sponsoring a food drive from now until the end of
February as part of their celebration of 100 years of scouting. Items collected will be donated to
Blountsville United Methodist Church to fill its food pantry. The scouts are collecting nonperishable
food items and nonfood toiletry items. Businesses and individuals are encouraged to get involved. To

OHS ATHLETIC BOOSTERS are preparing for their annual $10,000 cash giveaway. This year’s drawing
(which you do not have to be present to win) will be March 20 at 6 p.m. in the Oneonta High School
lobby. Each $100 ticket offers the purchaser a chance at the $10,000 plus dinner for two, door prizes,
and entertainment. Only 300 tickets are available so boosters urge those interested to purchase tickets

FRIENDS OF ONEONTA PUBLIC LIBRARY is planning a writers conference for April 20 at Twin Oaks at
Heritage. Featured writers will be Robert McCammon, Patti Callahan Henry, and Keith Thomson.
Tickets will be $50 each (tax deductible) and include heavy hors d’oeuvres, drinks, coffee, and cookies
during the book signing following the program. Proceeds will be used for the summer reading
program for children in Oneonta and Blount County.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION at Oneonta Elementary School will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday,
March 1, through Friday, March 19, according to principal Ed Parrish. To register, the student must be
5 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2010, and must bring a valid birth certificate, social security card,
and an Alabama certificate of immunization. In addition, each student who lives within the city limits of
Oneonta must bring two proofs of residence: a purchase, lease, or rental agreement and a utility bill
showing the residential address.

VILLAGE SPRINGS RESIDENTS REUNION will be held March 16 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Golden

BLOUNT COUNTY VOAD will meet Tuesday, March 30, between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the Blount
County EMA office in the courthouse. The regional VOAD meeting is being held today, Wednesday,
Feb. 24, between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at the United Way of Central Alabama, 3600 8th Avenue
South, Birmingham.  

IT’S SCHOLARSHIP TIME! The 2010 Carl Coleman Friend to Animals scholarship will be awarded this
spring to the winning nominee. Any Blount County graduating senior who wants a higher education
and has demonstrated a dedication to the care of animals may be nominated. Forms are available at

FAMILY’S HOME BURNS Eddie and Loretha Kent of Ragsdale Road in Murphree’s Valley lost
everything they owned when their home burned Sunday, Feb. 28. For those who have asked how they
can help, the Kents’ daughter Jennifer Ellison has set up a fund for them at a local bank. Donations
can be made to Special Account for Eddie and Loretha Kent at HomeTown Bank, Oneonta. The family
is grateful for the support.

COUNTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS will hold kindergarten pre-registration during school hours in April,
according to announcement made by James E. Carr, superintendent of Blount County schools.
Students must be 5 years of age on or before September 1, and must bring valid birth certificates,
records of immunization, proofs of residence, and social security cards.

ALABAMA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY will have its spring seminar on DNA “Tracking Your Genetic

DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM is being held between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. March 10 and March 11 at

MISS BLOUNT COUNTY BEAUTY PAGEANT will be held Saturday, March 13, at Oneonta High School.
All contestants through sixth grade will receive crowns, and all contestants in older divisions will
receive trophies. Winners in all divisions will receive crowns and trophies. The pageant is a fundraiser
